Frequency Converters

At Red Box Aviation we have over 20 years of experience in the aviation industry and, not only do we provide Ground Power Units (GPUs), we also offer 400 Hz static and fixed Frequency Converters. All of our products are certified by the TUV SUD product service Laboratory in the UK.

We offer fixed power units in 1KVA to 3KVA in 19″ rack or bench top case.

What is a Frequency Converter?

Static frequency converters (SFC) convert a fixed voltage and frequency to different voltage and frequency. They are used to power equipment which functions at a given voltage and frequency, such as aircraft or military equipment (115VAC, 400Hz), when the available power is, for example, UK mains (230VAC, 50Hz). SFCs, as opposed to older technology such as rotary or motor frequency converters, have no moving parts and are therefore more efficient and robust. They can also be used to convert from single to three-phase.

Standard applications for fixed and static frequency converters are common within the aviation industry; converting mains power (50/60Hz) to aircraft power (115VAC 400Hz). They are used to replicate aircraft power supplies when carrying out development, testing or repair-work on equipment installed within aircraft. This can be anything from system critical navigation equipment, through to commercial craft galley equipment such as coffee machines.

SFCs are used with military and oil industry applications when power at 400Hz is required at either single or three-phase. They are also used within general electronics industry when an application requires conversion from 50Hz to 60Hz, or 60Hz to 50Hz with a single or three-phase output.
